The Flattening of Medical Publishing

On April 28 and May 5 of this year the ARCHIVES received 2 manuscripts describing the outbreak of Fusarium infections associated with contact lens use. Because of the enormous public health implications of this information, these manuscripts were categorized as ARCHIVES Express and received expedited processing. Reviews from outside reviewers were received by May 3 and May 8, and the final revisions of the manuscripts were received by May 10. On June 10, both articles were published online at http://archopht.ama-assn.org, 5 and 6 weeks after original submission, followed by publication in the printed version of the ARCHIVES on July 10.1-2
